September 8, 2020, MIAMI, Fla. - South, FL business owner, Sherina Jones, set up a community refrigerator in Liberty City to help feed the locals who are struggling to purchase food for their families.
Jones is an esthetician and owner of Snob Beauty Box, a lash extension and skincare business, in Miramar, and just launched her skincare brand, 11|Seven Skin Essentials. After the pandemic hit, she wanted to help the Black and Brown communities that have been disproportionately affected in a way that could change their lives.
“The (Free)dge was started to bridge the gap in hunger throughout communities in South Florida,” said Jones. “Yes, there are many food drives but some people don’t have cars to get there, and that’s where the (Free)dge comes in.”
Jones paired up with local organization, The Roots Collective, to place the fridge in front of their business. And it was a sensation overnight. They now clean and stock the fridge two to three times a day. Local caterers, as well as, residents also drop by to donate food items and water for future use.
Although there is currently only one community fridge, Jones has plans to expand her efforts.
“I have plans on placing more refrigerators in different communities in Miami-Dade and Broward,” said Jones.
And it wouldn’t be Miami without a little art. Jones has commissioned an artist to paint the Liberty City fridge and is open to having more onboard for future fridges.
Jones is forever grateful for her business success and wanted to share her privilege with those less fortunate.
“I’m just trying to show God I’m grateful for how he healed me when I needed it most,” said Jones.
You can donate food to the (Free)dge in person at 5505 NW 7th Street, Miami, FL 33125 or donate to the cause on GoFundMe.
